The Oyo State Police Command has arrested a 23-year-old man, Sodiq Akorede, for allegedly killing a six-year-old girl, Mutiyatu Sunday, and severing her head in a shocking incident that has sparked outrage in Ibadan.
The command’s spokesman, Olayinka Ayanlade, disclosed the arrest in a statement on Sunday, confirming that the victim’s severed head was recovered from the suspect at the time of his arrest.
The command stated that the incident occurred on April 11, 2026, at Adigun village in the Olorunda Ogunsola area of the city.
According to the police, preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect, identified as Sodiq Kayode Akorede, allegedly committed the gruesome act before he was apprehended by security operatives.
Ayanlade further stated that the suspect confessed to the crime during interrogation.
“Following the arrest, preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect, one Sodiq Kayode Akorede ‘M’, aged 23, allegedly unlawfully killed a six-year-old girl, later identified as Mutiyatu Sunday, and severed her head, which was recovered from him.
“Furthermore, upon interrogation, the suspect confessed to the commission of the crime,” the statement read.
The police spokesman added that the suspect is currently receiving medical treatment after he was nearly lynched by angry residents, who descended on him before police intervention.
“He was thereafter conveyed to a medical facility for necessary treatment following injuries sustained from the mob attack and would be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for discreet investigation and prosecution,” Ayanlade said.
The command assured that a thorough investigation was ongoing and that justice would be served.
