Several residents of Ibadan have been displaced after a heavy rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms to which wreaked havoc across parts of the city late on Friday evening, and  destroyed houses and property worth millions of naira.

The downpour, which lasted several hours, affected communities including Alaaka, Igbonna and areas along the Apete–Awotan–Akufo Road, leaving many homes and structures damaged and forcing some residents to flee.

Residents said the storm caused extensive destruction, with roofs blown off buildings and parts of some houses collapsing under the intensity of the rainfall.

One resident of the affected area, who pleaded not to be named, said at least five buildings were severely impacted, while several other structures also sustained varying degrees of damage.

According to him, the disaster has left some families homeless and in urgent need of assistance.

He appealed to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the Oyo State Emergency Management Agency (OYSEMA) to urgently intervene and provide relief materials for the victims.

“I want to appeal to NEMA and SEMA to please come to the aid of the victims. It will go a long way to assist them,” he added.

The rainstorm also disrupted broadcasting operations at radio at a radio station, owned by a prominent traditional ruler. The rainstorm affected some broadcasting equipment at the station, which made the radio go off air temporarily.
